Playhouse beats out Mission Oaks Recreation and Parks District.
Carmichael Patch readers have spoken and said the Chautauqua Playhouse offers the best entertainment in Carmichael in our latest Readers Choice poll. Although the Mission Oaks Recreation and Parks District received one more vote, a reader posted a review for the playhouse. Comments and reviews count extra, as explained in our poll rules. "This theatre company has been producing top quality entertainment for all ages for 35 years," reader Eileen Beaver wrote. "(I) highly recommend it."

Chamber mixer at Jesuit HS, MORPD show at MO Community Center.
Today's events of the day are a Carmichael Chamber of Commerce mixer and a concert sponsored by the Mission Oaks Recreation and Parks District. The chamber mixer is at 5:30 p.m. at Jesuit High School, 1200 Jacob Lane. The MORPD show is at 7 p.m. at the Mission Oaks Community Center, 4701 Gibbons Drive in Carmichael. Come enjoy symphonic music and sounds.

Food and drink festival to be held May 19.

Band invited to perform at Essentially Ellington Competition and Festival.
By Laurel Hollis Rio Americano High School's top jazz ensemble emerged from a competitive field of U.S. and Canadian high school bands to place in the top 5 of 15 finalist groups invited to perform at the Essentially Ellington Competition and Festival next month. This is the 6th time a Rio ensemble has reached the "Super Bowl of high school jazz" to be held at the Lincoln Center of Performing Arts in New York May 4-6. Headed by Wynton Marsalis, artistic director of Jazz at Lincoln Center organization, the festival and competition features judging by jazz luminaries. Golden Empire Music Festival held last month.
By the San Juan Unified School District Scores of musicians from El Camino Fundamental High School received praise for their performances during the March 17 Golden Empire Music Festival, an annual event that showcases student talent. El Camino’s symphonic band earned “superior” marks for its work at the event, held at California State University, Sacramento and hosted by the Capitol Section of the California Music Educators’ Association. A media storm has been brewing around the movie "Hunger Games," released Friday in area theaters. “I think that ‘The Hunger Games’ has tapped into this audience by drawing on the dystopian fight-to-the-death genre tradition (that includes ‘Lord of the Flies,’ ‘Battle Royale,’ even ‘Running Man’), but tweaking it a bit with the female heroine," Pace University English professor Sarah Blackwood told a Bay Area NBC station.
