Two candidates for the state Assembly District representing Carmichael have received the endorsement of The Sacramento Bee. The Bee endorsed Peter Tateishi, the Republican chief of staff to U.S. Rep. Dan Lungren (R-Gold River) and Rancho Cordova City Councilman Ken Cooley, a Democrat. The two are running for the reconfigured state Assembly District 8 seat, which covers eastern Sacramento County, including Carmichael, Citrus Heights, Rancho Cordova and Arden Arcade. Their opponent is Republican Barbara Ortega, a small business woman and former lobbyist. Under the new open primary rules, voters on June 5 can vote for any candidate regardless of party, with the top two vote-getters competing in the general election in November, again …

Local election officials posted an online ad last week.
Sacramento County Elections officials have enlisted a young spokesman for voting by mail, and they aren't bashful about their influences. “The E-Trade Baby commercials are attention-grabbing and entertaining,” a press release quoted Sacramento County Registrar of Voters Jill LaVine as saying. “We wanted to use this medium to reach out and communicate with people of all ages about voting by mail.” In a video posted last week and originally produced by Riverside County, a talking toddler reminiscent of the ones promoting the online stock trading website advises his mom to vote by mail to avoid "standing in line like a vote-a-saurus." Just more than half of Sacramento County's 645,558 registered voters vote by mail, according to the press …

Sac. Bee: Congressman outraises challenger.
U.S. Rep. Dan Lungren (R-Gold River) took in more than $500,000 for his re-election campaign in the first three months of the year, outraising rival Ami Bera, an Elk Grove Democrat, The Sacramento Bee reported. Lungren ended March with just under $900,000 on hand, according to a report filed with the Federal Election Commission, The Bee reported. Bera, whose filing has not yet appeared on the FEC website, said in a release issued earlier this month that he raised $366,000. Mario Galvan, a Carmichael resident and San Juan High School teacher who supports the "Occupy Sacramento" movement, previously announced he would also challenge Lungren in the newly drawn 7th Congressional District, which includes east Sacramento County and stretches …

Sign at Fair Oaks/Garfield intersection targets congressman.
A Carmichael billboard may have just kicked off a war of words between U.S. Rep. Dan Lungren (R-Gold River) and his Democratic challenger leading up to this fall's 7th Congressional District race. "Congressman Lungren. Protecting Millionaires Instead of Medicare" reads the billboard located at the intersection of Fair Oaks Boulevard and Garfield Ave., across the street from the Sunrise Assisted Living center. The billboard invites viewers to visit the website www.MillionairesOverMedicare.com and was paid for by the Democratic Congresssional Campaign Committee. Democratic leaders, including Ami Bera, an Elk Grove Democrat who also ran against Lungren in 2010, have told The Sacramento Bee "provisions in the House GOP budget plan, which …

The House held hearings Thursday on an Obama administration plan to require that health insurance companies provide free contraceptives.
We got an email late last week from Janine Bera, wife of Ami Bera, the Elk Grove doctor and Democrat who's running against U.S. Rep. Dan Lungren in the 3rd Congressional District. In the message—presumably sent to women on the Bera campaign's email list—Mrs. Bera, who is also a physician, expressed her outrage at the hearings on birth control coverage that unfolded Thursday on Capitol Hill. Republicans and religious leaders are protesting President Obama's plan to require that health insurance companies provide free contraceptives to women. It's an issue affecting most women of childbearing age who enjoy sex but don't plan to have children in the near future—which is to say, a whole lot of women. Bera was upset that the House Committee on …
