Removal followed complaint.
Until a few weeks ago, many organizations were putting up banners on the fence by Denny's at the intersection of Fair Oaks Boulevard and Manzanita Avenue. Someone complained to the county that this was against code. It was and the county asked the property owner to have them removed. Instead of tearing them down, the property manager called each organization and asked that they be taken down. This allowed them to be reused in other locations rather than becoming trash. Kudos to the property manager. The other day, I saw that the banners are all now removed. My question though is did you use these to find organizations and events in the community? How will you find the things to do now? The park districts catalogs and websites? A community …

You told us what you liked most about your hometown.
Recently, we asked readers what you liked most about Carmichael. The results are in and the top answer is cited by 39 percent of respondents—was that you appreciate the community's scenic tree-lined setting near the American River. Sense of community came in second with 22 percent of the vote. There was a three-way tie for third place with 11 percent of the vote each for great schools, easy commute to Sacramento between freeways and "other". The "other" votes included "the only home I know" and "rural living, large lots, creeks and river". Six percent of you voted for diversity of residents and no one voted for cost of living. Check back for next week's poll: What's the Worst Thing About Carmichael? Stay tuned! ---

Q & A with Alla Kalush
Alla Kalush was born in Misrata, Libya. At age four, he and his family left Libya for England. They arrived in Carmichael in 1980, where he grew up. Kalush graduated from El Camino High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in economics at California State University, Sacramento. Today, he manages Sacramento Auto Center and is active in raising funds for the Children of Libya Aid Foundation, a charitable group. A U.S. Senate panel voted June 28 to approve U.S. participation in the military campaign against Libya and Moammar Gadhafi's forces. Since NATO took command of the Libya operation in early April, the U.S. role has largely been limited to support efforts such as intelligence, surveillance and electronic warfare. The U.S. has launched…

The Fliptastic gymnastic, dance and cheer teams did an incredible job at Team Gym Nationals held recently at Universal Studios in southern California. Fliptastic, located in Carmichael, had six levels compete in this competition. Levels 1, 3, 4 and 6 ranked first in the nation. This is the first time a gym has ever achieved such an accomplishment. Our level 2 and 5 teams did amazing and ranked fourth. We are the only Team Gym program in the U.S. that has a team for every level. Fliptastic is home to one of the only two all boys teams in the country. Our 48 Team Gym athletes practice year around with their coach Mandy Lister to prepare for this event. Our amazing Coach Mandy has now achieved six no. 1 titles for Team Gym. We are very proud …

Where was this historic photo taken?
Here is a well-traveled Carmichael intersection. The photograph was taken from an old Sacramento Suburban Directory, courtest of the Sacramento Room in the Sacramento Public Library. Can you identify it? The business on this photograph won't give you an idea of its location, because it no longer exists. Over the years, this intersection has seen several businesses come and go. I'll give you a hint, the property is up for sale today. Wouldn't it be wonderful if the community came together and purchased this little piece of property and turned it into a beautiful small oasis that represents the beauty of Carmichael. Any ideas? Comment here and watch this space for the answer.

Patch will be sitting down with Fire Chief Kurt Henke this week.
The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District, which protects 417 square miles of Sacramento and Placer Counties, swore in a new fire chief Tuesday. Later this week, we'll be sitting down with Fire Chief Kurt Henke to talk about the challenges his department faces and how he plans to address them. Among other things, we'll be asking him about the challenge of doing more with less, the dangers presented by the swifter-than-usual American River, and how the department plans to keep people safe over the Fourth of July holiday. What would you like us to ask? Is there a fire department or public safety topic you're particularly curious about? Post your questions in the comments section below and we'll try to pass them along to Henke.
